Chapter 4 : The Self

Hi :D

Today we are going to talk about SELF!






What is Self?
Self is the communication happens within on individual. Every question asked here are all related to 'you' yourselves. For example, "who are you?" , "what do you want to be?".


x. As we expand the concept of 'self' , the area of 'self' can be explored and widen into :

a. Self-concept
b. Self-awareness
c. Self-esteem
d. Self-disclosure




  1. Social comparison


We often compare and adjust our image and thinking with the way society acts and thinks.



    2. Other's Image of you



We often compare ourselves to those around us: friends, peers, etc.



    3.Self Interpretations & evaluations



Applies to your ethical and moral reasoning, beliefs and comprehension and comformity of things around you.


   4. Cultural Teachings



Your culture instills in you a variety of beliefs, values, and attitudes about such things as success.

Chapter 3 : Listening

Today our lecture had moved on to the third chapter of human communication which emphasises on the subject of "Listening". "Listening or Hearing" is one of the five basic senses that a human being possess. This topic contains several subtopics such as : 



  • Stages/Processes of Listening
  • Listening and Culture
  • Listening Effectively



Listening is a specialized process, a type of perception , by which you recieve auditory signals.

There are five stages of listening, these include : 

  •  Receiving (verbally and non-verbally)
  •  Understanding (decoding speaker's message)
  •  Remembering (retaining messages received)
  •  Evaluating (judging the messages received)
  •  Responding (response to the speaker)
- This is to remember what have been received and understand.
- Not everyone have the abilities to remember everything.

Chapter 1 : Foundation of Human Communication

We learned that communication is basically the means of communicating with another individual. Also, how important communication can be when communicating with others. 




  • Intrapersonal Communication (communicating with self, thinking, and making decisions)
  • Interpersonal Communication (communication that is done between two people)
  • Small Group and Organization Communication (introduction to solve problems)
  • Public Communication (informing and persuading)
  • Mass Communication (mainly persuaded by media)



We then move to " Culture and Human Communication" .

The aim of a cultural perspective
  1. Understanding how communication influence (between you and others )
  2. To distinguish what is universal (true for all people ) and what is relative (true for people in one culture and not true for people in other culture ).
  3. Communication effectively in a wide varienty of intercultural situations.
